“Tranquility”
Zula Inn Aparthotel
We were tired when we arrived. We'd traveled all day and, of course were new to the area. Santa Theresa can be a busy place with locals, tourists and expatriates. The main road is really dusty. To a couple of older tourists looking for a relaxing 5 days, it all seemed a bit much! We found our way Zula Inn. The rutted drive leading to the parking place belied what we found. The internet pictures didn't do it justice. The dust and activity of the main road faded into the background as Avi, one of the owners, escorted us to a beautiful cabina up on the hill. The sun was really intense that day but the beautiful gardens and covered porch afforded us a cool rest. Our cabina had an adequately equipped kitchen, a beautiful shower and toilet area and a double bed. There were shelves for clothing but no hangers or suitcase stand. A nice set of wicker furniture occupied the corner including a small table, two seater and two chairs. The large windows offered views of gorgeous gardens and surrounding jungle and sky. Very nice personnel came each day to clean and straighten (including doing the dishes!)but our things and our privacy were well respected. Just a few meters away was the rancho (communal gathering area with TV and hammocks under a palm thatched roof) and the pool. The pool was the perfect place to cool off after an adventure to nearby Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, Snorkeling in the hot sun or surfing (the specific activities we did) Each morning we got up and sat on the ample front porch sipping great Costa Rican coffee, munching fresh pastries and quietly strumming my guitar while the incredible array of birds, including a very thirsty humming bird that fed on the abundant lilies around our porch, sang their own varieties of music.
The staff was always helpful to us. Anything we asked for was accommodated. Rotom and Avi are both surfers who know the area beaches and where to get boards (Cheap and Good!). The gardener, Mauricio, keeps the gardens absolutely beautiful and will do anything to help you. He also loves a conversation and is patient with halting Spanish!
I have no hesitations in recommending the Zula Inn to anyone who wants to stay in Santa Teresa. All the breaks are within walking distance. There are great restaurants (Zula, Pulpo nearby and Piedras del Mar down past Malpais were our favorites) and relatively big grocery just just down the block.
